Learn about DokuWiki
After some discussions on the mailinglist and the recent hackfests, the DokuWiki core developers agreed to change the license used for the contents stored at www.dokuwiki.org from CC-BY-NC-SA 3.0 to CC-BY-SA 3.0, dropping the non-commercial restriction.
Note: this does not affect the license of the DokuWiki software, which stays GPL v2 as is.
Restricting the documentation to non-commercial uses hinders its distribution outside the DokuWiki domain. Because the NC clause is not compatible with the Free Software Foundation's definition of Free, DokuWiki documentation currently can not be included in many Linux distributions (eg. Debian). Even the Creative Commons organization recommends against the use of the NC clauseCitation needed.
For a good overview on what speaks against the use of the NC clause, have a look at Creative Commons -NC Licenses Considered Harmful
The DokuWiki core developers believe that this is the right step to make DokuWiki more accessible to more people.
Since this is a wiki, there is no sole copyright holder to the content who can just change the license. We had a look at how other projects handled it, talked to the Creative Commons organization and finally worked out a way that considers the legal rights of our contributors but avoids the need for a horde of lawyers .
We will start to license all new content under the CC-BY-SA license on April the 15th 2011.
Previous wiki contributors (as identified by the changelogs) will be informed about the license change by email. We ask all previous contributors to agree, by logging in and signing below. However we expect that not all previous contributors can be reached or will sign, but the more people sign, the better.
I agree to have all my contributions to the DokuWiki.org wiki contents to be relicensed under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License.
If you previously contributed to the wiki, please login and put your signature above.
Please if possible, login before signing. If you can't login10), sign with your email like [[email@example.com|Jon Doe]].
Previous wiki contributors who are concerned about this change, are asked to discuss their concerns at the mailinglist or forum. We will try our best to explain why we believe this license change to be right. If no agreement can be reached, we will see how to remove their contributions from the documentation.
